This article examines the characteristics and challenges of general wholesale trade, an understanding of which has led to the need to study the mechanism for managing inventory. The wide range of product assortments that distinguishes general trade from specialized trade creates the risk of both excess inventory, which ties up working capital, and shortages, which lead to customer loss. Building an effective mechanism for managing inventory is an important task for a general operator, allowing them to balance service level and profitability. The aim of this study was the need to examine the inventory management system in trade and to develop a logical model for managing inventory in general wholesale trade. General wholesale trade, as a special type of economic activity regulated by OKVED 2 code 46.9, became the object of this study. The research base, based on academic and scientific literature on inventory management, is supplemented by the practical knowledge of one of the authors of the publication, who works in the studied field and is directly involved in the accounting and control of inventory. The borrowed model of the inventory management mechanism is supplemented by the author's vision of the specifics of general wholesale trade and has been transformed into the following basic elements: inventory rationing as a fundamental element of the mechanism, systematic accounting and control of inventory status, consumer demand forecasting, a system for inventory regulation and optimization, and systematic management of illiquid and slow-moving inventory. The conclusion notes that, due to the diversity and large number of products, the inventory management mechanism should be logically integrated into the digital management systems of general retail organizations.
