In the modern world of digital technologies and available promotion opportunities, it is necessary to pay great attention to promoting tourists and attracting them to new or familiar territories. The study of tourism and recreational potential allows us to analyze existing territorial features, such as: the presence of natural, cultural and historical sites, transport and tourist infrastructure. Based on the existing potential, it is possible to formulate an up-to-date marketing strategy and increase the competitiveness of the region. Differentiation of tourism and recreational potential also makes it possible to solve problems in the field of sustainable development and competent resource planning. However, in order to develop these strategies and activities, it is necessary to assess the tourism and recreational potential in order to have an idea of what opportunities the territory has. There are many methods for assessing potential, each emphasizing different aspects of potential. The article discusses the concept of tourism and recreational potential and its differentiation, and also clearly demonstrates the difference in the potential of the Republic of Tatarstan based on calculations using the methodology of Yu.A. Khudenkikh.
